How to do a Fish Tail braid

1. Push all hair behind your shoulders. Preferably hair that has already been brushed and has no tangles. Divide hair into two sections down the back.
2. Take a small outer piece of one of the two sections of your hair (it doesn't matter which section you start with). Cross the small piece over and add it to the inside of the other section. This piece you have crossed will now become a part of the other section. Keep your crossed piece tight or hair may start to come out once you've finished braiding.
3. Now you're going to make the exact same cross but this time you will use the other section of hair. So, once again take a small piece from the outer part of the section and cross it over to the inside of the opposite section. Again, remember to keep the crosses tight.
4. Continue crosses small outer pieces over to the inside of the opposing section. The smaller the pieces you cross, the better the braid will end up. Stop braiding once you feel the sections getting too small. This should be around two or three inches from the bottom of you hair.

Beauty Tip of the Day!

If you don't wear lower lash mascara, now is the time to start. It instantly opens up your eyes, creating that coveted doe-eyed effect. Incentives, incentives.

That said, we get it. Sometimes you swipe a few coats on your bottom lashes and then you find it traveling down your face, leaving you with unsightly raccoon eyes come 4 p.m.

If this is your greatest lower lash fear, we're here to tell you that this can all be avoided thanks to a cool beauty trick.

When you apply mascara to your bottom lashes, only put it on the highest, curved point near the root—don't take it clear to the ends. This will still give you the eye-opening benefit, but since you didn't apply any to the tips, it won't allow the formula to transfer onto your skin.

Beauty Tip of the Day!

Dry hair upside down. To build volume when you blow-dry, work a palmful of mousse to your roots through to the ends, then flip your head over and dry your hair away from the scalp. Hair should be barely damp before you flip it back up and style it.

Beauty Tip of the Day!

Sometimes co-washing is not enough. Shampooing with a clarifying shampoo monthly will rid your hair and scalp of build-up helping your achieve your goal of ‘long hair don’t care’. Check out these 5 Reasons To Use a Clarifying Shampoo monthly.

1. You intend to switch to using milder products (sulfate free/silicone free)

If you have made a decision to start using milder products such as sulfate free shampoo or silicone free conditioner, you may get a better result with these milder products if your hair is completely clean to start with. This is especially true if you have been a regular user of silicone based styling products (serums, gels ). Using a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any deposits on your hair from your previous styling products and any dirt attached to the oil allows your hair to be able to work more effectively with the mild products. Immediately starting to use a mild shampoo may not be a good idea as it may not be able to effectively clean the hair to allow the mild conditioner to work well.

2. Build up: You see residue (whitish) on your scalp after washing

A very clear sign of build up is a whitish residue on the scalp (usually clear at the temple/forehead area) immediately after rinsing off shampoo and conditioner. This residue is a sign that the wash has not been effective and therefore a clarifying shampoo would help to ensure that the scalp and hair gets properly clean.

3. Build up: Your hair is getting progressively drier and no longer responds to conditioning or moisturizing products

Another sign of build is that hair no longer responds to conditioning/moisturizing products AND it is getting drier. The reason for the AND in capitals is that some people can experience a switch where their hair stops wanting moisturizing products as it can stay moist on its own. This is often due to adopting products and a washing routine that suits the hair. However, the case for build up is made when you are following your normal routine (for example 1 weekly shampoo and conditioner and a mid week co-wash) and that work for months but suddenly you find yourself needing to co-wash every other day for the same result. It is possible that a clarifying wash may help to get rid of any build up that may hinder your products from getting their full effect as happened several months back.

4. You have been strictly co-washing

If you have been strictly co-washing for a while and you use styling products such as oils, moisturizers and gels, you are at risk of getting build up as conditioner is not really an effective long term cleanser. Performing a clarifying wash every so often helps to prevent build up formation.

5. You are a heavy oil user

If you are using a lot of oil (oiling hair daily, regularly using heavy butters and oils e.g shea butter, castor oil, doing regular oil rinses/hot oil treatments etc) or have naturally oily hair, you may find that mild shampoos simply are not able to clean your hair sufficiently. Some people are able to skip out on using conditioner as a result and therefore avoid build up. However, if your hair needs conditioner, you may find that without the occasional clarifying shampoo, you may develop build up issues.

Beauty Tip of the Day!

Dramatic winged eyeliner and glamorous smoky eyes may be the standouts of your beauty repertoire, but we can’t forget about the natural look! We recommend using matte to semi-matte shadows. While a little sheen is fine, anything too sparkly will end up looking more dramatic. To create an au naturel eyeshadow look simple follow the steps listed below!

Instructions
Choose 3 shadows in varying shades of the same color family. Try an eyeshadow palette that will take all the guesswork out of color selection.
Apply a wash of the lightest color from lash line to brow bone.
Apply a slightly darker color to lid.
Using your darkest shade and a light hand, blend the shadow into the crease.
Finally, take Leary’s advice and “blend, blend and then blend again” until all shadow lines are blurred and you’ve achieved what looks like an effortless wash of color across the eye.
Finish off your shadow with a little liner that stays as close to the lash line as possible along with a coat of mascara and voilà—you’re good to go!

Beauty Tip of the Day!

Let fresh radiant skin shine through! Forgetting to exfoliate can leave your skin covered in dead cells and can cause it to look dull and older than it really is.

Here are some great exfoliating tips:

Exfoliate in the morning. Skin renews itself at night therefore the morning is the perfect time for scrubbing away those dead skin cells away.
Once or twice a week is enough. Over exfoliating can tear the skin. Rub the product in a circular motion for 30 seconds and then rinse off with lukewarm water - never hot water.
Mixing facial scrub and your exfoliant together can save time.
Be sure to only exfoliate skin that has not been exposed to the sun for too long.
A clean nubby washcloth will work great. Don't use a sponge—they tend to stay damp and trap dead skin, creating a breeding ground for bacteria.

Beauty Tip of the Day!

A rigorous brushing, or what is technically known as a scientific brushing, canand does make a huge difference to the health of your hair. It does so many wonderful things for your hair and is a very overlooked tool for a healthy scalp and hair. First, brushing your hair before taking a shower, or before going to bed at night if you don’t have the time to give in the morning, will stimulate your scalp and hair follicles meaning that you have brought the blood flow, which brings all the nutrients, to the scalp. This is especially important if you are experiencing hair loss. With hair loss, the first instinct is to become gentle with the hair and not disturb it but that is, in fact, the opposite of what should be done. The next thing a good brushing will do is help to unclog the pores in the scalp and distribute the natural occurring oils in your hair, which are, of course, the absolute best oils for the hair. The immediate result (after shampooing) is shinier, bouncier hair from the very first time you try it. The long term effects of regular, rigorous brushing is stronger hair that grows faster and has more shine and body.

The best brushes for this use is the boar bristle mixed with nylon. You get the benefit of the boar bristle to distribute the oils with a little help from the nylon bristles in detangling the hair. If your hair is fine boar bristle alone should be enough to detangle your hair. So, how do we do this scientific brushing and is it difficult?

Actually, there is no wrong way to do it. Brush your hair in every direction being careful not to rip through the tangles. First, brush your hair normally to remove all the tangles, when that is done, brush everything back away from the face concentrating on the scalp as the brush’s main objective. Once that’s done, brush everything to the right or left one section at a time until the whole side is done, repeat to the other side and then again from back to front and back again. You are now done and ready to wash your hair. Your scalp should be tingling which means the blood is rushing to the scalp. If you have any scalp issues or just want to really be good to your hair, now would be a good time to massage some nourishing essential oils for the hair into your scalp.

Now it’s time to shampoo your hair with a high quality shampoo containing more essential oils. If you are a daily shampooer limit your brushings to every other shampoo day.

There are two times that the scientific brushing is not recommended. One, is if you have individual extensions in the hair, as this will cause breakage, you girls who wear wefts will have no problem with the brushing. And two, is the evening before or the day of a chemical service.

If you men think this is for women only and not for you, you are missing out on many things like hair loss prevention and thick, shiny, strong hair, which if you haven’t guessed yet, we women love.

Beauty Tip of the Day!

Eyeliner is one of the most important cosmetics and can give you a dramatic look without much time or effort. Whether you choose a soft line or a dramatic stroke, you can embellish the windows to your soul by spending just a few minutes in front of a mirror with an eyeliner pencil.

Step-by-step ways to draw a perfect line.

Applying eyeliner is a tricky task, but getting a straight line is worth your time.

1. Stand 6 inches away from a mirror and tilt your chin up, so that when you look down your nose into the mirror, you can see your entire eyelid.

2. Dab concealer or dust translucent powder on your upper lids. Blend well with a sponge or lightly pat with a fingertip to cover veins and prevent creasing.

3. Before applying liner, determine your eye shape. If eyes are close-set or round, line only the outer corners. Otherwise, rim the entire upper lid.

4. Soften the pencil top by rolling it between your fingers.

5. Gently pull your eyelid taut at an upward angle. Beginning at the inner corner, draw small, connected dashes along the top lashes. Be sure to stay close to the roots so there is no skin visible between the lashes and the liner. To make eyes look bigger, extend the liner slightly beyond the outer corners.

6. Brush a matching powder shadow on top of the liner to keep it from rubbing off.

7. Soften the line with a sponge tip or cotton swab by rubbing it slightly up and out at the corners.

8. Use a cotton swab to fix mistakes. For larger messes, dip it in makeup remove

Beauty Tip of the Day!

Consider it one of life’s great ironies, but when it comes to beauty, the most undone looks usually take the most effort. Ever seen a celebrity waltz down the red carpet with a subtle face of makeup that says “I’m too cool to care” or a head of messy beach waves that look perfectly nonchalant? Well, since we are beauty sages, we all know those looks took hours and countless products to craft—the jig is up Aniston. Unfortunately, our struggle to master the perfect, “I-roll-out-of-bed-cool” messy bun, has also required a massive amount of effort (and many lost moments). Usually it’s either too messy and deflated, too ballerina-tight, or just wrong all together… until now. Here's a fool-proof way to nail the perfectly messy bun in just 3 steps.

1. First, pull your hair into a loose ponytail, as high or as low as you’d like it. Don’t use a comb or worry about your strands being perfectly slicked back—the look is effortless.
2. Separate the hair in your ponytail into two or three sections and tease. Teasing is the key step that totally changed our bun game—it gives you the volume and messy texture you need to pull off the look and keeps your bun from ballerina status.
3. Separate your teased hair into two sections and wrap the hair in opposite directions, as you would when creating a topknot. But, instead of pinning your hair neatly in, secure your hair with a bobby pin about an inch from the bottom of your strands, leaving the ends to fray around your bun and create a messy effect. If you feel like the body of your bun is too tight, gently pull it apart with your hands or the end of a comb. Also, pull a few rogue pieces out around the face.

Beauty Tip of the Day!

If you’ve never been scolded by a makeup artist or eyebrow enthusiast for failing to fill in your eyebrows, let us take this time to give the lecture you’ve been missing. A filled-in brow can open up your eyes, making you look wide-awake and bright-eyed–even more so than your morning latte. Still worried you might overdo it? Fear not.

5 seconds: Using a spoolie brush (that round spiral brush that looks like a mascara wand), brush your brows out and up away from the center of your face.
30 seconds: Using an angled brush, apply the brow color in short, hair-like strokes. Alternating two colors of powders allows for a realistic, soft finish. Follow your natural arch, filling in sparse areas, but don’t overextend your eyebrows outside of their original shape.
10 seconds: Run the spoolie over the eyebrows once more to blur any harsh markings. Then set all your hard work in place with quick swipe of brow wax, which tends to be less noticeable than gel.
15 seconds: To make your beautiful brows really pop, use a small concealer brush to apply a brightening concealer right underneath your eyebrows.
Total Time: 1 minute.
