First things first: If you have any current breakouts, it's best to cover them up with some acne treatment before you start drawing on your cat face: "Try to put a little anti-acne gel on it before you apply the makeup, just so you have some shot at it not being worse the next morning," says dermatologist Dr. Kavita Mariwalla.
Next, be mindful of your pores. Mariwalla advises against any peels or steam treatments that open up your pores before All Hallows Eve as doing so allows more product to seep into your skin. Instead, she recommends using a primer before you apply your makeup, to really help seal the pores off.
Also, it's important to be mindful of what you're putting on your face. While you may have an elaborate plan to pull off a Heidi Klum–esque costume, try to stick with products that are safe to use on your complexion. For instance, glue, metal paints, and red paints are harsh on skin.
Lastly, a thorough removal process is key. Use cold cream first (like Pond's Cold Cream Cleanser, $9), then following up with makeup remover and a pH-balanced soap. The next day, use an exfoliator and an anti-inflammatory mask to dig up any leftover makeup residue.
